Desecration: Convict granted leave to appeal

The top court, while granting leave to appeal, has accepted the jail petition of a convict involved in the offence of desecration of the Holy Quran nine years ago.
A two-judge bench, headed by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, granted leave to appeal. The bench also decided to reconsider the evidence in the matter.
Muhammad Imran was awarded life imprisonment by a sessions court judge, which the LHC upheld.
In November 2009, 25-year-old Imran had allegedly desecrated the Holy Quran in Faisalabad. However, the convict in his statement, under Section 342 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, had claimed he was falsely implicated in the case because of a clash with one of the witnesses. The hearing of the case has been adjourned for an indefinite period.
