IHC resolves bail pleas in NTS corruption case
Also reserves verdict in Afghan smuggling case
ISLAMABAD:
Pre-arrest bails of the National Testing Service (NTS) officers were withdrawn in a case pertaining to the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) inquiries against embezzlement of funds by the NTS administration.
The case was being heard by a divisional bench of the Islamabad High Court comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani.
Seven NTS officers appeared before the court with their pre-arrest bail pleas seeking to save themselves from arrest, however on the basis of NAB not being in possession of arrest warrants the pre-arrest bail pleas were withdrawn.
During the hearing, NAB prosecutor observed the anti-graft watchdog hasn’t issued arrest warrants and inquiries against officers are at the moment suspended thus accepting the request, the court resolved the pleas.
Meanwhile, the IHC reserved its verdict after listening to arguments from both parties in a case pertaining to human smuggling of around 30 Afghanis.
Justice Kiyani held the hearing while the Deputy Attorney General and FIA investigation officer appeared before the court.
The deputy attorney general presenting arguments said that PIA task force’s Mohsin Raza and FIA officials were also involved in the trafficking. “Transaction links between the smuggler and FIA accused surfaced.
Earlier, the British High Commission had demanded video of smuggling Afghan locals on airport but the case’s initial investigation officer didn’t send the video to special central judge Rawalpindi and also presented an incomplete challan to the special central judge Rawalpindi.
However, during inquiry in FIA special investigation unit, Muhammad Aijaz was arrested from Peshawar and immigration stamp was recovered from him. Justice Kiyani remarked the inquiry of assets is being held separately, so currently four inquiries are underway. The investigation officer told the court another department is holding the assets inquiry.
