An accountability court handed over former chief traffic police officer Rai Ejaz Ahmed on a ten-day physical remand to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday for allegedly embezzling Rs700 million from police funds.

NAB’s prosecutor contended that they needed physical custody of the accused to investigate the case. He said that heavy transactions had been made from the accused’s accounts, while important records of the case were also missing.

On the other hand, Rai alleged that his guards and employees were tortured. He said that the inquiry had been going on for the last 12 months and he had appeared whenever he was summoned. He added that he signed every single bill he passed. Cross-checking bills was not my job, he contended. He alleged that he was mistreated by NAB.

Rai claimed that a media trial was being conducted. Taking suo-motto notice is the exclusive right of the court, he contended adding that NAB did not receive a complaint against him. Despite this, an inquiry was initiated, he said.

After hearing arguments from both the parties, the court granted NAB a ten-day physical remand of the accused.

A team from the bureau arrested Rai Ejaz from Karachi a few days ago. He was accused of embezzling Rs700 million from the Gujrat police funds.

NAB also apprehended suspended district accounts officer Chan Peer, Food Department Deputy Director Muhammad Afzal, naqdi moharar appointed at DPO Gujrat office Muhammad Fayyaz, former constable DPO Gujrat office Rameez Ahmed Senior Account Officer Muhammad Ashraf, National Bank Manager Muhammad Asif Butt, National Bank Operations Manager Shakeel Ahmed and the owners of a petrol pump, Sagheer Ahmed and Ghulam Sarwar. The accused individuals are in NAB’s custody.
