PM approves Rs70 million package for Dawar’s family: Afridi

Minister says a five-member parliamentary committee will be formed to review the progress in the investigations

Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi has announced a special package of Rs70 million for the family of martyred SP Tahir Dawar.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, he said the heirs of the martyred police officers would get jobs in government departments. He added that it was the responsibility of the government to take care of the heirs of martyred security personnel.

The minister shared that Dawar was looking after three families and he was martyred on duty. He said Prime Minister Imran Khan had directed that a package should be given to his heirs.

He said that a five-member parliamentary committee would be formed to review progress in the investigations of the killing of SP Tahir Dawar.

Afridi said everybody had a right to do politics but ‘forces using the people to spread misinformation and attempting to destabilise Pakistan would be countered’. “We will not allow such forces to act with hostility against Pakistan.” He vowed to make an example of these elements.

He said that the civil military leadership was on the same page on security issues. He said the key stakeholders should realise their responsibility regarding peace and security of Pakistan.

Referring to the anti-encroachment drive, he said some influential personalities were perpetuating propaganda on social media about the anti-encroachment drive. He added that the poor would not be disturbed and dislodged from their homes.

Responding to a question about Safe City Project, he said the security cameras installed in the capital under the project could not recognise the face and the vehicles’ number plates adding investigation was underway about the 90 per cent   advance payment of these cameras.

The minister lauded the performance of Inspector General Police Islamabad and said crime rate in the city had dropped by 40 per cent.

On the occasion, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Police inspector general said the K-P police fought guerrilla war against the terrorists in the province and rendered sacrifices of more than 1,500 of its personnel.

He said the K-P police was being reformed on modern lines. In the first 100 days, he said 25 projects had been started as part of the reforms.  He informed K-P Safety Commission and e-policing were the prominent features of the reforms.

He said investigations were underway regarding the murder of Maulana Samiul Haq and would be shared with the media upon completion.

On the occasion, Ahmed Din, the brother of SP Tahir Dawar thanked the government for announcing the package and reposed his confidence in the parliamentary committee and the on-going investigation.
