Passengers’ rights: ‘Display compensation rules at bus stands’
‘Strict action shall be taken against transporters who violate the directive’.
FAISALABAD:
The Punjab Transport Department has directed commercial transporters in the province to clearly display at their bus stands and inside buses notices containing compensation amounts and damages entitled to people in case of injuries in road accidents.
According to a notification issued on Thursday, commercial transporters would be required to put up charts and notices containing information on compensation amounts in case of injuries and death in traffic accidents. The move is meant to ensure that people can claim damages and that transporters can no longer get away with traffic accidents without having to pay due penalties to the affected people or their families.
It says that the legal heirs of people killed in road accidents are entitled to a compensation amount of Rs250,000. A person who losses an elbow, arm above elbow, knee or leg above knee will be entitled to Rs65,000. The compensation for a person who losses his both legs in an accident is Rs140,000, for loss of hearing is Rs65000, for loss of an eye Rs75,000, for loss of both eyes Rs140,000, for loss of a thumb Rs40,000 and for loss of all five toes of a foot Rs50,000. A person will be entitled to Rs40,000 in case of loss of a forefinger, and Rs38,000 in case of any other finger. An ankle injury will be compensated by Rs38,000.
Head or face injuries will be compensated by Rs50,000 and a bone fracture by Rs40,000.
The notification sets compensation money in case of an injury to male sexual organs at Rs50,000 and to a tooth at Rs12,500 (Rs25,000 in case of loss of two or more teeth). For injuries due to which people will need to be hospitalised for 20 days, compensation money has been set at Rs25,000.
In case of other injuries not listed in the notification, the compensation can be between Rs10,000 and Rs140,000 depending on the scale of the injury.
The Road Transport secretary has directed all divisional commissioners and road transport authorities to monitor bus stands and ensure that compensation schedules were properly displayed.
He further asked them to take strict action against transporters, bus stands operators and any other concerned person in case the directive was not implemented.
