Nine of a family killed, four injured
Mukhtar and 19 others allegedly raided Nawaz’s house in Sheikhupura village.
SHEIKHUPURA:
Nine members of Nawaz’s family were killed and four injured in a Sheikhupura village before dawn on Thursday morning over an old rivalry.
An FIR was registered against Mukhtar alias Bugti and his 19 accomplices – Ramazan, Shaukat, Noor Muhammad, Salman, Muhammad Iqbal, Shamoon, Zameer Ahmed, Muhammad Arif, Muhammad Arshad, Malik Mustafa, Saifullah, Muhammad Akmal and Asghar and six unidentified men.
Station house officer Azam Basra said Mukhtar and Nawaz were both residents of Maha Devi village. He said the two had an old rivalry. He said Nawaz was not home when the incident took place. Nawaz and Mukhtar, he said, were both wanted by police in several cases of murder and robbery. He said that before Thursday morning’s incident, the two men had killed a man each from each other’s families 10 years ago. He said then the two had settled the matter taking oath on Quran in presence of a pir they both revered.
He said the two had not confronted each other over the decade but continued to be involved in crimes. SP Irfanullah Khan and his team also reached the village after getting the news of the incident.
The district police officer told the media that eight teams had been formed and raids would soon be carried out throughout the district to arrest of the accused. He said three men had been arrested using information provided by the complainants. He said police were questioning the three.
Eyewitnesses told The Express Tribune that they woke up in the middle of the night to the sounds of firing. They said shooting was very intense and that the attackers fled immediately afterwards. “As soon as firing ended, at least 15 people rushed out of the house and fled in no time. I couldn’t identify any of them,” said a next door neighbour, who said he had been sleeping on his roof when the incident took place.
He said the incident happened at around 2:30am.
SHO Basra said the bodies of the deceased had been handed over to the family after the autopsy. He said eight of the deceased were identified as Riaz, Aslam, Abid, Khurram Shahzad, Jia Bibi, Monazza Bibi, Aisha Bibi and Azra Bibi.
The injured were Sajida Bibi, Shahzad, Afzal and Rukhsana. The injured were taken to Mayo Hospital in Lahore where they were reported to be in a critical condition by doctors who treated them.
