No evidence Sharif made investments, court told
Defence continues cross-examination of investigation officer
ISLAMABAD:
National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) Investigation Officer (IO) Muhammad Kamran informed the accountability court on Friday that there was no evidence to prove that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif provided money for Flagship Investment or the offshore companies of his son, Hussain Nawaz.
During his cross-examination in the Flagship Investment reference, Kamran denied the defense side's claim regarding the sale agreement of the Gulf Steel Mills' 25% shares. He told the accountability court that no such deed existed.
Defence lawyer Khawaja Haris continued cross-examination of the IO, as Accountability Judge Arshad Malik resumed hearing on Flagship Investment reference against Sharif. The former prime minister could not appear before the court and sought one-day exemption from hearing which was accepted.
No defence needed in graft case, Sharif tells court
The IO said that he had found no evidence which could prove that the Sharif had provided money for Flagship Investment or the offshore companies of Hussain Nawaz. He added that no response had been received from the UK authorities to mutual legal assistance, seeking records regarding the offshore companies and the Flagship Investment.
He denied any sale agreement of Gulf Steel Mills' 25% shares. He told the court that he did not find any supportive document except for a copy of a sale deed, which was attached to the affidavit of Tariq Shafi. He added that the joint investigation team (JIT) concluded that no sale agreement existed in actual.
“Even no witness gave reference of documents other than this deed in favor of defense's stance,” he said. After the findings of the JIT, it become unnecessary to dig further as to whom these shares were sold, he added.
Later, the court adjourned hearing of the case until next Monday. The court is expected to decide on the matter of providing a questionnaire to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the reference to testify him under section 342.
Shehbaz says PM offered NRO to sister
Haris requested the court to share the questionnaire on the next date of hearing so that his client could make preparations during the period of final arguments in Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference. The court has summoned the both sides on November 27 for final arguments in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case.
