‘Foreign players to boost rugby camp’

Coach Pirrit says the move will motivate Pakistan team.

KARACHI:

Pakistan rugby coach Mike Pirrit has said that five foreign players joining the ongoing camp in Islamabad will make a big difference to the team that will play the Asian Five-Nation Division III match against Guam on June 22 in Jakarta.

According to Pirrit, three UK-based players Junaid, Mansoor and Immad, as well as Adnan and Azmat Niazi from UAE will join the camp on Saturday.

“It’s a good thing to have players from UK because their presence will motivate the ones here,” Pirrit told The Express Tribune. “I feel they’ll challenge the local ones to do better and help them understand different strategies because UK players train for the sport throughout the year and have more exposure, while here players have practice sessions only on weekends.”

Pirrit further felt that Pakistani players, although lacking in technique, are well-suited for the sport. The New Zealander believed that the biggest challenge for the team is to play as a unit.

Pirrit will be holding trials this weekend among the 34 players, while a team of 24 will be announced on June 16.
