49,000 motorcyclists fined for not wearing helmets in Multan

Official says number of head injuries has declined because of campaign

Traffic police in Multan launched a comprehensive campaign against motorcyclists without helmets and imposed fines on 49,000 violators during the month of October. The drive against motorcyclists without helmets has been successful as a large number of people have now started using helmets, sources said on Tuesday.

Officials claimed that violators were being challaned without any discrimination. There were a large number of violators when the campaign commenced in the beginning of October. However, the number has declined due to a comprehensive check and balance by the traffic police.

Sources maintained that a fine of Rs200 was imposed on each violator, while Rs9.8 million was deposited in the national exchequer due to the helmet campaign.

Traffic Police PRO Adnan said that citizens were showing responsibility and the department was receiving a good response. He said that the number head injuries in accidents had declined as a result of the comprehensive campaign.

Meanwhile, the prices of helmets in auto markets has increased due to a high demand.

A shopkeeper Muhammad Asif said that the demand for helmets has been on the rise since the past month. He added that the rising demand of helmets has boosted their business.

Motorcyclist Muhammad Saad Qureshi said that he has been wearing helmet for the past month after he was challaned. He maintained that after wearing a helmet, he feels safe and secure while riding his two-wheeler.
