LAHORE:

The Elite Force training centre in Bedian has had no electricity since Saturday, when the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) disconnected power due to its failure to pay Rs12.9 million outstanding bills.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Elite Force training centre officials said that it would be difficult to continue training without electricity for long. He said they could not even give the cadets a break for some days. A cadet said that he had been unable to sleep properly for the past two nights.

An official at the training centre speaking on condition of anonymity said that bills of the office of the inspector general of police were always paid on time. He said power supply at training centres should be a similar priority.

SSP (Headquarters) Ahmad Kamal said the issue would be resolved in a day or two. He said monthly bills were paid regularly but arrears from past months had led to the accumulation of the amount.

Lesco spokesman, Javed Ahmad, said that training centre’s power connection would only be restored once they get a written assurance for and payment of some of the outstanding amount.

A Lesco notification stated that power to Punjab Highway Patrolling Police centre was also disconnected. It said the department owed Rs0.7 million to the company.  Punjab Highway Patrolling Police, however, refused to confirm or deny it.
