JUI-F's Haideri to lead Opposition in Senate

Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Ghafoor Haideri has been elected Opposition leader in the Senate.

Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Ghafoor Haideri has been elected Opposition leader in the Senate on Monday.

According to the senate secretary, a notification of Haideri's new appointment has been issued. He received 19 votes - 12 from the JUI-F, five from FATA and two from independent candidates.

Speaking to the media, Haideri said he will make an effort to take on board all political parties in the Senate and raise issues of national interest in the Upper House of Parliament.

He added that a united opposition can dissuade the government from making unfavourable decisions.

The PML-N's Ishaq Dar bagged 15 votes. These include seven from the PML-N, two from the National Party, three from Jamaat-e-Islami, and one each from Pakhtunkhwa Awami Party and an independent senator.
