11 die in Golan heights clash

Israeli army gunfire killed 11 people and wounded about 220 others Sunday

Israeli army gunfire killed 11 people and wounded about 220 others Sunday as demonstrators on the Syrian side tried to cross the ceasefire line on the annexed Golan, Syria's SANA news agency said.

Earlier Doctor Ali Kanaan in the nearby Syrian city of Kuneitra, quoted by SANA, had given names of at least six killed, saying they had been hit by bullets in the head and chest.

The protest drew Syrian and Palestinian youths to mark the anniversary of the 1967 Six-Day War when Israel seized the Golan, Syrian television said, showing footage of Israeli soldiers opening fire.

The demonstrators chanted slogans and hurled rocks as they scaled the fence at several locations to try to enter the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, the television reported.

On May 15, Israeli gunfire had killed 12 people and wounded hundreds as Palestinians marched on Israel's borders with Lebanon, Syria and Gaza in a mass show of mourning over the creation of the Jewish state.

Four of the demonstrators were killed on the Golan.
