Quality analysis: 11 union councils drinking unsafe water
Samples were taken from 21 locations.
HYDERABAD:
A water quality analysis report has declared that the people of eleven union councils in Hyderabad Rural tehsil are drinking water that is unfit for human consumption.
The test was conducted on samples collected from 21 locations by the Water Testing and Surveillance Laboratory of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS).
Prof. Hussain Bux Kolachi, the chairman of the department of Community Medicine and Public Health Sciences, LUMHS, released a report on Friday. The samples were tested for their conductivity, salinity and total dissolved solids (TDS). The report said the TDS was alarmingly high, ranging between 2,500 mg/l to 7,000 mg/l against the World Health Organization’s (WHO) standard of 500mg/l.
The Hyderabad Rural tehsil comprises 11 union councils with a population of around 30,000 in Hatri union council alone. Three canals, springing from Kotri Barrage, are their source.
Sewage from Hyderabad city is dumped into these canals, mainly Phuleli and Pinyar canals. Their water is used in Tando Muhammad Khan and Badin districts too.
The residents of these areas are exposed to water-borne diseases like hepatitis A and E, typhoid, diarrhoea and pyoderma (the formation of pus). The report recommends that people boil and filter this water before drinking.
Those who drink sub-soil water should change the location of the bore and install new equipment.
