KARACHI: An accountability court in Karachi allowed on Tuesday Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Dr Asim Hussain to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Dr Asim, a close aide of former president Asif Ali Zardari, was given permission after his counsel presented medical reports before the court.  Accepting the plea, the court granted permission to Dr Asim to travel abroad for medical treatment between October 2 and October 30. Dr Asim was picked up by the Sindh Rangers from his office in Karachi's Clifton area in 2016. He has been accused of facilitating the treatment of terrorists at his private hospital and misappropriation of funds.

After spending 90 days in Rangers' custody, Dr Asim was handed over to the Sindh Police and cases were registered against him for aiding and abetting militants and gangsters at his hospital.

In 2016, an accountability court indicted the former petroleum minister in a Rs460 million corruption reference. Other cases include corruption of Rs60 billion by misusing authority to allot plots and encroachment. He was released from prison in 2017 after the Sindh High Court issued an order for his release on bail. Dr Asim has been frequently granted permission to travel abroad for medical checkups.
