Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday directed Federal Minister of Railways Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad to work round the clock to pull the national institution from deficit, Express News reported.

During his meeting with the minister, the premier told Rasheed that pulling the locomotive industry out of the losses could prove to be an achievement of the government.

The minister pledged that he will make Pakistan Railways at par with the best rail service in the world.

Sound rail network imperative for national development: Sheikh Rasheed

On Monday, Sheikh Rasheed inaugurated a new Lahore-Faisalabad train service. The service boasts an air-conditioned parlour and an economy coach with fares that stand at Rs190, Rs400 and Rs500, respectively.

Citing debt concerns, Rasheed had also made announcements to bring down the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) investments in the railways to $6.2 billion, a move that could halt many projects relating to upgrading the organisation.

The announcement gives credence to reports Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government intends to scrutinise $62 billion infrastructure and power projects, which the previous Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government initiated under the CPEC.

powayman | 5 years ago | Reply How about Pakistan getting out of the business of making steel, running airlines and running railroads? Pakistan doesn't need the govt running these businesses and it's obvious the govt in inept at running businesses. USA is the World's economic superpower and their govt doesn't own businesses - no oil rigs, refineries, airlines, railroads, steel mills etc -- free market works.
