LAHORE: Following in the footsteps on the City Traffic Police Lahore (CTPL), the National Highways and Motorways Police (NHMP) launched a crackdown against bikers without helmets.

The decision was taken during a meeting of senior officials at the NHMP office on Monday. The meeting was chaired by DIG Central Zone Ahmad Arsalan Malik and was attended by Sector Commander SSP Masroor Aalam Kolachi, SSP Ghulam Jaffar, SP Chaudhry Muhammad Atta and chief patrol officers.

During the meeting, Malik directed the officers to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against those violating traffic safety laws. He ordered action against those speeding, overloading goods and passengers on vehicles and motorcyclists not using helmets.

Analysing the performance of the past three months, DIG Arsalan Malik asked officers to take substantive steps to reduce factors causing accidents which result in the loss of precious lives, permanent disability, major injuries and monetary loss.

The DIG also directed officials to strictly enforce the rules. In the same manner, officials were directed to impose heavy fines and to impound the vehicles of those found to be speeding, over loading and violating lane rules.

Malik also asked officers to have interactive sessions with their subordinates in order to reduce communication gaps between supervisors and field staff. He further directed that all sector commanders will enhance their patrolling to monitor the progress of enforcement campaigns.

He added that he will personally monitor the performance of each officer on a daily basis.

The DIG asked the officers to improve the visibility of patrolling vehicles and to provide timely help to distressed road users, a hallmark of NHMP.

Beat commanders were directed to conduct meetings with transporters in order to convey a strong message about the motorway police’s action plan.

In addition to this, it was ordered that meetings with National Highway Authority (NHA) officials be carried out frequently so that roads can be repaired. DIG Ahmad Arslan Malik directed officials to ensure that every violator is penalised irrespective of their status. (edited)
