Eight-month review: Crime on the rise in Rawalpindi

At least 19 people killed in 394 armed robberies; traders demand improved security

RAWALPINDI: During current year, crimes in Rawalpindi have increased dangerously, according to a survey conducted by Daily Express.

In past eight months, citizens were deprived of assets worth millions along with 575 cars and 749 motorbikes as per the crime data of police.

Situation of cases registered under recovery section 411 PPC is disappointing and only 13 cases were registered. Traders and citizens expressed suspicion over crimes’ situation.

According to statistics gleamed from the reports registered during eight months of the current year, a total of 11,191 cases were registered.

Among these at least 166 incidents of murders for enmity were reported at various precincts, besides 19 incidents of people murdered for showing resistance during incidents of armed robbery took place and 317 reports of attempted murder were during the period.

Citizens reported 440 events of damage or harm during the past eight months. Meanwhile, police recorded two cases of kidnapping-for-ransom, 113 kidnappings over unspecified causes and 313 cases of kidnapping of women and girls.

Although no case of gang-rape was recorded, 48 cases of rape under rape 376 PPC were registered at various precincts of Rawalpindi. Police also booked 67 cases of unnatural offence.

During the said period 58 events of police resistance and 34 incidents of resisting official work, and 84 cases of fatal accidents took place. Moreover 28 incidents of robbery, a bank robbery, 394 armed robberies, 21 cases of cars and other vehicles’ theft and 94 cases of motorbike theft were reported.

Similarly 80 cases under section 382 PPC of valuable possession’s theft were reported. Similarly 363 cases of burglary and 347 events of common thefts were reported, while 554 cases of car and other type of vehicle theft, 655 incidents of motorcycle theft were reported, while 53 incidents of cattle theft took place, police registered only 13 cases regarding recovery of stolen stuff in all this time.

Police registered total of 1,134 cases under illegal arms act, 1,443 under drugs recovery act and 70 cases under gambling act.

Trader community and citizens have expressed suspicion over deteriorated crime situation in the Rawalpindi.

A few days ago, a delegation of traders led by Shahid Ghafoor Paracha met Rawalpindi CPO and made him aware of the crime situation.

A spokesman of traders Naveed Kanwal told Daily Express that crime situation in the city was deteriorating but no one was paying attention.

“We traders were thinking that security will improve with the arrival of new government, but we are worried because the crime situation in Rawalpindi has worsened over the past few months. He demanded RPO Rawalpindi and CPO Rawalpindi to strengthen crime control in the city.
