KARACHI: The newly-appointed Sindh Police chief, IG Dr Syed Kaleem Imam convened a meeting at the Central Police Office on Thursday to review the overall law and order situation in the city as well as the security arrangements in place for the month of Muharram.

The IG directed the officials to ensure that all contingencies were taken care of in the security plan for Muharram. Referring to routine crimes, he said, "Professional competence and skills must be remarkably improved to combat street crimes including robberies, mobile and car snatching," adding that the department must ensure swift arrests and punishment for the criminals and proper investigation of the cases.

He said that police stations should not delay registering FIRs and complaints. "Indiscriminate steps should be taken to ensure justice for the victims," he said, advising the officers to perform their duties within the powers given by the state.

Safe City Project

IG Sindh said that projects like Safe City would have helped in curbing street crimes and wished it had been completed earlier. He said that he would try to get the project completed as soon as possible, but added that the department's immediate focus should be improving the conditions in police stations. "Work on houses and accommodation of the police officers will remain on hold until the conditions at police stations are improved," he said. He added that no officer of the Sindh police will be allowed more than two servants and two cars.

IG Dr Imam praised former IG AD Khwaja for his efforts and added that the good works of former officers would be continued. He also said that if station house officers did not show improvement in their performance, action would be taken against them and added that he would not cave to any pressure. He said that he will take action against the criminals and officials alike, who were involved in criminal activities. On harassment and missing children's issue, IG Sindh said, "I guarantee that we will work to our full capacity."
