ISLAMABAD :
The government is learnt to have called for the ever meeting of the board of governors of National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) on September 25.

Since NACTA was formed in 2009, no such meeting could be held several factors, including the absence of senior government functionaries.

The board of governors’ meeting will primarily deal with massive restructuring of NACTA in addition to other pressing matters, sources told The Express Tribune.

Prime Minister Imran Khan is scheduled to preside over this meeting which would be attended by other members of the board of governors, including all chief ministers of provinces, Inspectors-General of police, home ministers and home secretaries of all provinces and the federal interior secretary.

NACTA hangs in balance, awaits reforms

Sources said that the meeting was also likely to be attended by directors-general of primary intelligence agencies, including the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).

Sources said that the meeting was likely to approve NACTA’s executive body in a bid to reshape the anti-terrorism watchdog.

Subsequently, there would be no need for the prime minister to preside over the meeting of NACTA’s board of governors.

According to current rules, it is mandatory that the board of governors’ meeting will be chaired by the Prime Minister as its chairman. This was one of the major obstacles that board of governors meeting was never convened.

Provinces ‘miserably’ fail to register madrassas

After the prime minister’s approval, the board of governors would endorse the exertive body.

According to the NACTA Act, the BOG “may meet as and when required but it shall meet at least once in each quarter of a year”.

In March 2016, the Ministry of Interior had moved a summary, requesting the then PM, Nawaz Sharif, to convene the first meeting of NACTA’s board of governors. But, this meeting never took place.
