KARACHI:
Police arrested two protestors during an anti-encroachment operation in Chamra Chorangi area of Karachi on Tuesday.
People who had established encroachments resisted the operation by pelting stones at the police and also firing shots at the police's armoured cars.
Express 24/7 correspondent Shehryar Mirza reports that residents of the area say they have purchased the land but have been considered squatters because the land has been encroached.
Mirza said the they are poor people who are mostly immigrants from other cities. "The government needs to see which parties have illegally acquired this land and sold it to unsuspecting people," said Mirza.
The protesters subjected a police constable to severe torture, who was later shifted to hospital.
The police party on the other hand fired tear gas shells and aerial shots to disperse the protesters, who were not ready to leave their encroachments.
