Healthcare facility: NUMS envisions establishing a medical city in Islamabad

Establishment is expected to have 4,000 hospital beds in its first phase

ISLAMABAD: The National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) envisions a comprehensive integrated healthcare delivery system of a ‘medical city’ at the main university campus in the federal capital. The medical city is expected to have 4,000 hospital beds in the first phase. Subsequently specialty hospitals will be created and the hospital staff will be trained at its medical, nursing dental and allied health professional colleges.

National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Federal Minister Aamer Mehmood Kiani visited NUMS on Thursday wherein the NUMS Vice Chancellor Lt Gen Syed Muhammad Imran Majeed, briefed the minister on the working and progress of NUMS and apprised him of various challenges in the sector. He elaborated that in order to help bring in appropriate quality healthcare, in accordance with the best international standards and practices, NUMS is looking beyond education, training and research, by actually incorporating an adjunctive university-run healthcare system.

NUMS VC said that university was backed up by an extensive network of hospitals aiming to improve the quality of life through healthcare education, research, innovation, and facilities. Furthermore, the university’s aim is not just to produce doctors but also nurses and healthcare professionals.
