A group of teachers slammed the delay in compensation by United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) Pakistan to master trainer teachers. These teachers had provided training to those teachers performing duties for General Elections 2018.
In a statement, United Teachers’ Council (UTC), a teachers group in Punjab, said UNOPS had not paid remuneration to master trainers. The statement said the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had released payments to UNOPS, however, the latter had not been transferred the amount to the teachers.

In the statement, UTC leader Kashif Shahzad Chaudhry said those who performed duties on the Election Day had been paid. However, he said that the teachers who worked for months in preparation for the day had yet to be given their dues. “It’s a matter of concern for the teachers,” he said.

UTC Punjab leaders Tariq Mehmood and Hafiz Ghulam Mohiuddin demanded that the UNDP Pakistan chapter and ECP take notice of the ‘incompetence’ of the UNOP. They further demanded that the master trainers should be paid their dues immediately and action should be taken against those officials responsible for the delay.
The statement further said that the contracts of district training coordinators ended on August 13 instead of their expiry date of August 28. “This became a problem for the trainers as the district training coordinators were the only channel of communication for them. Trainers now have no source of information for their pending dues,” the statement said.

The statement also highlighted that the teachers performing duties as data entry operators, alongside the returning officers in the general elections and assistant returning officers, had also not been paid their dues. UTC demanded that the ECP also take notice of this delay and dues of data entry operators and assistant returning officers be paid as soon as possible.
