GUJRANWALA:
Ghaggar Mandi is yet to be cleansed of sacrificial animal waste due to the alleged mismanagement of municipal authorities, while the district administration has failed to remove offal from the streets of Gujranwala.

The city’s air is dominated by a foul stench in the aftermath of Eidul Azha. Animal waste, including offal, still awaits disposal in most streets of Ghaggar Mandi.

Some residents had thrown animal waste into narrow drains, causing a stringent smell in their respective localities.

While speaking to Express News, Ahmed Murtaza, a local, complained that walking on any street in his neighbourhood, especially GT Road, is unbearable due to the putrid stench of rotting offal.

He added that despite several complaints, there has been no action by authorities. “In the end, all they did was shift the offal to the corner of the street and cover it with plastic.”

Murtaza also complained that there are several locations that have been converted into temporary garbage dumps, causing surrounding areas to reek of rot. Another resident of the city, Shahnawaz Murad, said conditions are terrible at the moment. His mind races back to a time when offal was disposed by municipal authorities in a timely manner.

“The officials also used to pour limestone powder to eliminate the bacteria and germs at one time, however, those days are gone,” he lamented.

“The same is the case in other cities and adjoining areas where discarded parts of animals are scattered here and there, thus causing a foul odour,” he said.

When contacted, officials from the municipal committee told Express News that the district administration is utilising all the resources to dispose of offal from the city. They added animal waste has been removed from different areas, while efforts are under way to clean the city completely.

They maintained that machinery and workers are working in various localities to shift offal to dumping sites.
