HYDERABAD:
Sindh local government minister Saeed Ghani has announced his ambition to initiate reforms in local government institutions without more ado. Talking to the media after paying a surprise visit to Hyderabad on Thursday, the new LG minister vowed that he will bring change in the local bodies in a few months.

"The people are suffering due to the past mistakes of the local government department," he acknowledged, warning of kick-starting indiscriminate action against the absentee staff regardless of their political connections or influence.

Ghani observed that the staff does not regularly attend office in the local bodies. He said he will ensure that the employees not only attend their office regularly but also discharge their obligations. "This will be done in a few weeks."

He said he has planned to visit all districts of Sindh to review the situation and performance of the local bodies. Ghani said the Pakistan Peoples Party's leadership wanted to improve the services of LG bodies and he does not want to disappoint the leadership.

Earlier, the minister visited Station Road, Tilak Incline, Dadan Shah, Heerabad and other parts of downtown Hyderabad.

Dismayed by the delay in disposal of the sacrificial animals' offal, he told off Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Health Director Rafique Rajput, giving him a few hours to clean the city.

Ghani, who was photographed standing near a garbage dump filled with offal, said the situation in certain areas of Hyderabad was not satisfactory. Yet, he added, the overall performance of the local bodies in maintaining cleanliness during Eid holidays is better than the past.
