There were no immediate reports of damage. But radio and television stations in San Jose said the quake was felt throughout the country, sowing fear in the population. The US Geological Survey said the quake was registered at 9:26 pm (0326 GMT Tuesday) at a depth of 29 kilometers (17.4 miles).
Seismologist Ronnie Quintero of the Vulcanologic and Seismologic Observatory of Costa Rica said the quake occurred about 25 kilometers from the port of Quepos, a region where there was a quake of similar magnitude May 20.
