Promoting talent: Students sing their hearts out
The competition aimed to showcase the talents of youngsters.

Hundreds of students got a chance to showcase their talents at the “Talent Discovery Singing Competition’’ on Saturday at Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA).
The students had a choice of four categories, classical, pop, rock, folk and national, from which to perform their songs. The judges’ panel consisted of Khalid Siddiqi and Shaukat Manzoor, a senior composer. The students suggested that the PNCA should organise a similar singing competition on national level.
Ali Kamal from Federal Government Sir Syed School Sadar (Branch), Rawalpindi, came in first. He sang a famous semi-classical song “Morey Saiyan” from the film “Teray Sang”. Mujeebur Rehman from Ali Trust School Lehtrar, who sang another famous Pashto song “Janana Zama Janana”, came in second, while Shariq Kanwar from Beaconhouse School, who sang a national song, stood third.
The event was organised by the PNCA in collaboration with Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and aimed at showcasing talent of its young students. PNCA Director General Tauqir Nasir was the chief guest.
“These children are the future. From amongst them will come our next Mehdi Hassan and Noor Jahan,” he said.
He assured the students his full support in arranging similar events. Stressing on the importance of education he said their first priority should be their studies. Only after having excelled in that department should they pursue music, he added.
Ali Kamal, a 10th grader, who wants become a classical singer and has been singing at different functions since an early age said, “This kind of an event encourages youngsters to adopt singing as their profession, it was a big platform for the youngsters.”
Some of the participating schools were Roots School System, Beaconhouse School System, Faizul Islam School, Ali Trust School Lehtrar, FG Sir Syed School Tipu Road, F-G Sir Syed Saddar Branch and Al-Farabi School.
