KARACHI: As a gesture of goodwill before Independence Day, the authorities released on Sunday 26 Indian fishermen who were caught fishing in Pakistani territories.

The fishermen, who included three Muslims, Siraj, Feroz and Shabbir, were taken to Lahore from Cantt Station from where they would be handed over to Indian authorities at Wagah. The Edhi Foundation announced to bear the travel expenses of the fishermen.

They will likely reach their country today (Monday). According to relevant authorities, the fishermen were released to show goodwill on the occasion of Independence Day.

Fishermen of both the neighbouring countries are often arrested as they enter the other country's territories to catch fish. The frequent arrests of poor people has been a matter of concern for rights activists of both the countries who demand that such fishermen be immediately released as they unintentionally enter the limits of the other country.
