Vettel on pole for Monaco GP

Q3 halted for 38 minutes after Perez crashed heavily.

MONTE CARLO:

German world champion Sebastian Vettel will start from pole for the fifth time in six races after posting the fastest time in qualifying for today’s Monaco Grand Prix.

McLaren’s Jenson Button will start alongside Vettel on the grid, while Vettel’s Red Bull teammate Mark Webber lines up in third place.

Earlier, the final qualifying session had to be halted for over half an hour after Mexico’s Sergio Perez crashed his Sauber in spectacular fashion. The 21-year-old rookie, in a Sauber car, lost control of his machine as he came out of the tunnel at the same place where German Nico Rosberg suffered a similar crash during morning practice.

“The most important thing was to hear that Sergio is okay,” said Vettel. “He’s conscious. We are all thinking of him and hopefully he can start the race.”
