‘Pakistan needs to invest in technology’
Employment opportunities, market efficiency major challenges.
KARACHI:
Pakistan needs to invest in science and technology to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through sustained and enhanced economic growth, according to Higher Education Commission (HEC) former chairman Professor Dr Atta ur Rehman.
He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the first marketing and branding summit held on Saturday at a local hotel. The event was organised by the Memon Professional Forum and Nutshell Forum in collaboration with Marketing Association of Pakistan and Pakistan Software Houses Association, titled ‘Driving growth in the digital age-challenges and opportunities’.
Issues like employment generation, enhancing market efficiency and climate change are some of the difficult challenges before Pakistan which need to be overcome in order to meet millennium development goals, he said.
Effective science and technology policies are crucial to the development of Pakistan in two distinct yet interconnected ways, he added.
Firstly, science and technology can provide tools that help alleviate the specific problems that afflict our nation and impede their development prospects, such as disease, lack of infrastructure and degradation of the environment, Rehman said. Secondly, science and technology are central to the dynamics of economic development itself.
The Summit underlined the need to develop effective understanding among professionals about emerging marketing and branding issues and share industry best practices. Speakers said that the focus of marketing and branding professionals should be on how to go through this rapidly changing world.
