Authorities only able to lift a small fraction of waste

GUJRANWALA: Gujranwala is facing the dilemma of inadequate sanitation and cleanliness. The heaps of garbage strewn about the place speak volumes of the efficiency of the departments concerned.

Despite the tall claims of cleanliness by authorities concerned, almost every locality of the city is in pathetic shape, causing great difficulties for citizens, besides posing health hazards.

The conditions are deteriorating with each passing day as the district administration seems unable to ensure cleanliness for the residents of the city.



The administration is also hampered by the lack of necessary equipment and this can be gauged from the fact that they are only able to lift a small fraction of the several tonnes of waste produced daily.

Although major roads apparently seem to be in better sanitary conditions, most localities are in deplorable shape. Among these areas are Aziz Colony, Lalazar Colony, Madina Colony, Rehmatpura, Mohalla Haji Naam Din, Rehman Colony, Wassanpura, Rasoolpura, Sardar Colony, Shamsabad, Sharifpura and Shadman Town which are in a miserable state.

In each and every corner of these localities, especially open spaces, locals have to step over garbage.

“In the last so many years, we have seen no one from the municipal committee to clean garbage and collect refuse,” a resident Azfar Sheikh told Express News. He added, “There is no concept of sweeping streets which are full of litter and garbage.”

“It is very unfortunate that the district administration is not taking the issue of sanitary conditions seriously,” Ayub Tahir, a senior citizen complained.



The prevailing conditions not only pose a threat to the atmosphere and ecological system of the city, but can also trigger an outbreak of different diseases in the areas.

Most of the localities are in deplorable condition. In each and every corner of different areas, especially open spaces, locals find heaps of garbage and waste.

When Express News visited such areas, it found that the municipal workers were burning garbage instead of disposing it at the designated dumping sites.
