PHEC chairman says leadership skills necessary for top posts at universities

LAHORE: Punjab Higher Education Commission Chairperson Dr Nizamuddin has said every university, be it public or private, must have a centre of excellence to transfer leadership skills among key stakeholders.

He expressed these views while addressing a seminar on leadership organised the University of Management and Technology (UMT) on Wednesday. Leadership skills were necessary for important university positions such as deans, directors and heads of departments.

“Apart from those appointed at top positions, every faculty member ought to demonstrate these skills while in the classroom,” he emphasised. He appreciated UMT’s efforts in launching a leadership programme in a new context and advised other varsities to do the same.

UMT Chairman Hasan Sohaib said he believed that the leadership programme would inspire other to follow suit by developing their own programmes in accordance with their organisational environments and cultutres.

“Individuals who have received quality education and training during their academic careers are the country’s only hope,” he maintained. Education, he said, will force them to take responsibility for what they do.

Any leadership programme that was not paving the way for growth and innovation will soon be out dated and obsolete. He urged participants to transfer knowledge to the next generation in an innovative way.

Other speakers stated that the experiences gained during university life were crucial in bringing a positive change in the socio economic and political landscape of the country.
