There's a film based on Harry Styles in the works and we can't keep calm!

Based on Wattpad series, writer Anna Todd was approached by producers when 'After' gained popularity

It all started when a 24-year-old Anna Todd took her obsession with One Direction towards writing.

She started off with typing small chapters for After, a fan-fiction based on 1D's former vocalist Harry Styles. But back then, Todd didn't know how popular her little work of art would get one day.

"I was a struggling army wife going to community college who didn't know what to do with my life," she told BBC. "I would read a lot of fan fiction on [publishing website] Wattpad and felt I had read everything so one day, I decided to write a chapter."

After was a three-part series on Wattpad - based on the life and rocky relationship of two college students: Harry Styles and Tessa Young; better known as Hessa.  It was eventually converted into a five-book series and is now on its path to become a Hollywood film.

Todd still can't believe it. "When I started I had no followers but I did it for fun," she revealed. "After I wrote the first chapter, I wanted to know what happened so every day, I would write a chapter and it became more popular. I could see the numbers go up and when I tried to make a Twitter account, I couldn't even use my own name because all these fan accounts already existed. I realised people actually cared and loved it."

Eventually, the now 29-year-old author was contacted by the app, informing how the publishers were getting in touch to publish After as a proper series.

"I was getting messages from agents and didn't understand what was happening," Todd reminisced. "I went to New York and met with four publishing houses and there was an auction - every publisher wanted me to take down my online chapters and I didn't want to do it. I kept saying no and they gave in."

However, once the publishers came in, Todd was asked to change the original names of the band members to avoid issues.

Therefore, Harry Styles became Hardin Scott, Zayn Malik became Zed Evans and Liam Payne was renamed as Landon Gisbon. The other two band members, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, portray smaller parts in the film and are yet to be revealed.

Hardin is played by Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, (you might remember him as young Voldemort from Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince), and Tessa Young is portrayed by Josaphine Langford (who also happens to be the younger sister of Hannah Baker from 13 Reasons Why).

Asked if there might be a cameo from Styles in After, Todd laughed it off as highly unlikely, but went on to say that the singer's management know about the fan fiction and the film production.

She said that if it wasn't for fans, she would never have been able to publish anything. "For me, One Direction is the only fandom I've been in and I made so many friends. The internet can help you come out of your shell and gives you a chance to make friends who have the same passion as you. It's a real community," Todd added.
