Pakistan sit 2nd in bridge event
Team suffers mixed fortunes on second day.
KARACHI:
Pakistan ended the second day of the Bridge Federation of Asia and Middle East (BFAME) Team Championship in second place after fighting back from a poor start.
The team lost to Sri Lanka 19-11 and India 21-9 in the first and third rounds but managed wins over Bangladesh (9-4) and Jordan (25-4) before losing to hosts India again in the fifth round. Following the conclusion of matches on the second day, Pakistan sit second with 97 points, 22 behind the hosts after six rounds of the event that is taking place in Chennai.
“India has been the most formidable side for us,” Pakistan’s senior player Rashidul Ghazi told The Express Tribune. “We have lost two matches against them in two days so it definitely puts us in a tough situation but our target is to qualify for the World Championships and we’ll make sure that we end the tournament in second.
“We still have five more days to turn the tables.”
The championship is featuring six teams including Pakistan, India, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Jordan and Sri Lanka. Pakistan won this championship in 1991 and have lost every final to India since then.
