5 unconventional Bollywood on-screen pairings

Although some of these couples pleasantly surprised audiences, others weren't as convincing

Upcoming Bollywood film Fanney Khan is one that is highly-anticipated, mainly because it stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan alongside Anil Kapoor. However, while many may be excited for these two actors to be sharing screen space once again, Aishwarya will not be romancing Anil - as many may assume. The Mohabbatein actor has actually been paired with Rajkummar Rao... I know, it took us a while to let that sink in too.

Just like this, there have been many other unusual couplings in the past. Although some pleasantly surprised audiences, others weren't as convincing but left a mark nonetheless. Compiled from The Indian Express, here are some unconventional onscreen collaborations.

1. Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal in 'Raazi'

Raazi proved to be a blockbuster around the world with an interesting storyline and an even more intriguing cast comprising Alia opposite Vicky.

Though both are powerhouse performers - on differing scales - no one had thought of the two together until director Meghna Gulzar roped them in. And many are glad she did, because it turned out a treat!

2. Kareena Kapoor and Sumeet Vyas in 'Veere Di Wedding'

Another recently-released film, Veere Di Wedding also saw an atypical jodi. Kareena is one of Bollywood’s crème de la crème while Vyas is a boy-next-door. But together, they worked.

3. Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil'

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was one of the films Aishwarya did right after her break from Bollywood. While some were excited to see the blue-eyed beauty on the silver screen once again, others were fascinated by her pairing with Ranbir.

Despite their real and reel age difference, their chemistry was through the roof and their on-screen romance set high standards in the industry.

4. Naseeruddin Shah and Madhuri Dixit in 'Dedh Ishqiya'

The performances of both Bollywood icons portrayed real class. Theirs was a love story full of poetry and tasteful glances so it comes as no surprise that they did amazingly paired together.

5. Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu in 'Cheeni Kum'

The last unusual casting on our list is of Amitabh and Tabu. The then 64-year-old romanced a 34-year-old Tabu on-screen. Cheeni Kum truly portrayed the saying, age is just a number. Also, did you know that the character of Tabu’s on-screen father played by Paresh Rawal was younger to Amitabh in the film?
