Butt to be named vice-captain
KARACHI:
Opening batsman Salman Butt is expected to be announced as vice-captain of the Pakistan cricket team for the upcoming Asia Cup and England tour.
Sources revealed to the Daily Express that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to appoint Butt as Shahid Afridi’s right-hand man for the for the Asia Cup - which starts with Pakistan playing hosts Sri Lanka on June 15 - as well as for the lengthy tour of England where Pakistan will play the hosts as well their home fixtures against Australia.
Initially the PCB was considering appointing different vice-captains for the Asia Cup and England tour with Butt fulfilling the role for the former and Younus Khan serving as Afridi’s deputy for the latter. But now, chances are that Butt will be the deputy on both tours as captain Afridi and team coach Waqar Younis both have said that they have no objection the opener’s appointment. Salman butt had a previous short stint at being Pakitsan’s vice-captain back in 2007.
Final-15 announcement
A meeting of National Selection Committee to announce the squad for the Asia Cup is scheduled for Thursday June 3, 2010 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, a PCB press release said Monday.
PCB will name the final 15 for the Asia Cup only from the 35-strong provisional squad announced earlier and will also formally announce the vice-captain.
Additionally, the camp for the national team will commence at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore from June 5 till June 10.
Previously, both announcements as well as the training camp were expected to be held in Karachi but have been shifted to Lahore due to security concerns.
