Couples, beware: Big weddings could lead to divorce

Spending too much on your wedding could result in an eventual break up

Big, elaborate weddings are becoming increasingly popular amongst young couples these days. And why not? If you can afford it then what’s wrong with going all out on what’s supposed to be the most special day of your life.

But mind you, the stats may not be in your favour. According to a recent study conducted by Emory University in Atlanta, spending too much on your wedding could result in an eventual divorce, reported The Independent.



Researchers Andrew Francis-Tan and Hugo M Mialon lead the survey of over 3,000 married couples in the US and found that “the duration of marriage is inversely associated with spending on the wedding ceremony.”

According to the study,  weddings that cost between $5,000 to $10,000 show less chances of ending in divorce than those that cost $20,000 or above.



The findings also reveal that the more expensive the engagement ring, the less likely the marriage will last. “Specifically, in the sample of men, spending between $2,000 and $4,000 on an engagement ring is associated with 1.3 times greater hazard of divorce, as compared to spending between $500 to $2,000,” the study papers say.

Interestingly, the study finds that jetting off on a honeymoon soon after tying the knot is “significantly associated with a lower hazard of divorce.” Looks like splurging on honeymoon might be a better idea than that gorgeous bridal jora you’ve been dreaming off all your life.
