As many as 104 polling stations have been declared as highly sensitive in Rawalpindi district, while 91 have been declared as sensitive.

According to officials of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), polling schemes for the seven national assembly (NA) and 15 provincial assembly constituencies of Rawalpindi district have been finalised.

As many as 75 candidates are competing for the NA seats while 166 candidates are vying for the PA seats. There are seven heavyweight candidates in the running including former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, former premier Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, former interior minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan, Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Awami Muslim League (AML) Chairman Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Raja Qamarul Islam and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi.

As many as 6,200 polling booths in 2,576 polling stations will be set up in the district. There will be 3,200 polling booths for men and 3,000 for women voters.

104 polling stations have been declared as highly sensitive including 24 in NA-57, Rawalpindi-I, 15 in NA-58 Rawalpindi-II, 31 in NA-59 Rawalpindi-III, 20 in NA-62, Rawalpindi-VI and 13 in NA-63 Rawalpindi-VII.

A further 91 polling stations have been termed as sensitive.

There are as many as 3.126 million voters in the constituency, including 1.647 men and 1.478 women.

Strict security arrangements will be made for highly sensitive polling stations of the district.

ECP officials said that the district authorities are taking action in accordance with the law against those who are violating the code of conduct without any discrimination.

Illegal election publicity material including unapproved size banners and posters displayed by political parties and election candidates are being removed, they added.


Election security

The Rawalpindi district police have finalized election security plan.

According to City Police Officer (CPO) Ahsan Abbas, the police are taking all possible measures to maintain law and order during the election campaign and on July 25, the polling day.

The CPO informed that a ban on the display of weapons will be implemented in letter and spirit and no one would be allowed to violate the ban.

He said that polling stations in Rawalpindi were divided into three categories, A, B and C for security purposes.

As part of security arrangements, the CPO said that the district had been divided into sectors and sub-sectors. Each police station in the district constitutes one sector and a police reserve will be at the disposal of the sector police station during polls.

Meanwhile, polling stations have been divided into sub-sectors with each sub-sector comprising 20 stations.

Two motorbike-riding police officers have been assigned to each sub-sector while a patrol van with six police officers will also be available.

To boost their numbers, Abbas said that they have sought 1,200 extra police officers to assist them during the elections.
