LAHORE:
Government college teachers were directed not to participate in any electioneering activity for the upcoming general elections on Wednesday.

These orders were issued in a letter written by the Punjab Public Instructions (Colleges) Director Dr Muhammad Nasrullah Virk. The letter was addressed to all directors of education, deputy directors of education and principals of government colleges in the province.

In the letter, Virk said that under the orders received by the Punjab Higher Education Department (HED), teachers were forbidden from taking part in any political activity. “If anyone is found guilty, strict disciplinary action will be taken by the department.”

“Your attention is invited to rule 24 of the Punjab Government Servants [Conduct] Rules 1966, according to which, no government servant shall take part in, subscribe in aid of or assist in any way, any political movement in Punjab,” the letter stated.

The director further added that participating in or being involved in political activity in any form, including demonstrations, is strictly prohibited for a government servant. Such activity is classified as misconduct and is punishable under the Punjab Employees, Discipline and Accountability Act 2006.

The letter ordered officials to take action against anyone found violating these rules. “In view of the above, you are directed to ensure that: appropriate and prompt action must be taken against the officer/official, under your administrative control, who is found involved in any form of political activity,” the letter went on to say.

Further, the letter also warned employees to refrain from such activities and to follow the rules.

“All employees under your administrative control are reminded of rule 24 of the Punjab Government Servants (Conduct) Rules 1966 and its implications,” the letter read. Strict compliance by all the concerned is highly solicited, it concluded.
