The Sindh prisons IG, the Malir jail superintendent and the HIV Aids programme manager have been summoned by the Sindh High Court (SHC) to defend contempt of court charges.
On Tuesday, SHC’s Justice Ahmed Ali M Shaikh was hearing an application moved Syed Iqbal Kazmi of the Human Rights Commission for South Asia. He reminded the court that on September 30, 2010, Justice Amir Hani Muslim passed an order to release prisoners suffering from HIV AIDS after informing the doctors treating them.
Kazmi told the SHC bench on Monday that this order is being violated and 10 prisoners suffering from AIDS have been released — one of whom, M Ali, died because he never completed his treatment. The bench issued show-cause notices to Sindh Prisons IG Ghulam Qadir Thebo, Malir District Jail superintendent Nazir Shah, Sindh AIDS Control Programme manager Dr Syed Qamar Abbas and Sindh Health Secretary Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi for June 7.
