Local bodies: ‘Elections to be held during present tenure’

Local government minister says floods delayed polls.

THATTA:

The government wants to hold the local body elections during its tenure and a date for the polls would be decided only after all the coalition parties agree to it, said Sindh Minister for Local Bodies Agha Siraj Durrani while talking to the media on Tuesday.

If the coalition partners want an amendment in the local government law, it would have to be approved by the provincial assembly and the election commission can then hold the polls after 90 days.

The elections are said to have been delayed because of the floods. “Ninety-nine per cent of the flood survivors have already gone back to their villages and this has been communicated to the chief minister,” said Durrani.

Durrani said that the present local bodies are being run by administrators and the government has asked them to control their expenses, retrench daily wagers and issue show-cause notices to regular employees if their performance is not satisfactory.

He said that he was not satisfied with the past performance of the local bodies. “The government would hold an audit of the funds given to them during the past three years and stern action would be taken against those found to be involved in corruption.”
