LAHORE:

“Our spirit is where we hold all our pain. We can find hope and happiness by connecting to it,” Naumana Amjad, a psychiatrist, said on Sunday.

Amjad was addressing the participants of a seminar called Nature of Man: Sacred and Secular View, was organised by the Hast-o-Neest Centre for Traditional Art and Culture.

The seminar aimed at discussing alternative solutions to psychological and social problems.

Amjad said the words “sacred, divine, secular and primordial” were crucial to an understanding of human nature. References from various religious scripture including Islam, Christianity and Hinduism aided Amjad’s explanations of human nature and spiritualism.

She said that religion gave people clues to human nature.

“When we fail to solve our problems on our own, we should seek for help to connect with our soul. Religion provides that help,” she said.

She said, “Man’s nature has not changed. It’s the things in his surroundings that have changed and influencing his nature and behaviours.”

She also referred to Imam Ghazali’s classification of human nature. Babra Jehangir, a literature student, said, “I believe it’s about submitting oneself to a higher entity. Amjad’s research seems to focus on religion.

Taimur from the Hast-o-Neest Centre said that most people neglected their spiritual side. “This is what we are suffering from today.”

Towards the end of the seminar, Amjad talked about some spiritual, psychological and mental disorders.
