A police official told Express News that Muhammad Azhar and Naila, residents of Akbar Chowk, got married against the will of their family members a few weeks ago.

He added that in a bid to take revenge, Naila’s brothers Sarfaraz, Shehzad, Afaq, Munna and father Anwar intercepted the couple while they were riding a motorcycle and opened fire on them.

Rise in honour killings

As a result, both Naila and Amjad were killed on the spot. The police shifted the bodies to hospital for legal formalities and registered a case against the accused on the complaint of Azam’s brother.

Meanwhile, locals told Express News that victim Azam had married three times, but had no children from any of the unions. They said that a few weeks ago, he divorced his third wife and married Naila against the will of their families. Earlier in May, a newlywed couple was shot dead in an armed attack in Umerkot.

The couple was gunned down at their residence in Pithoro taluka near the Pithoro police station. Both victims suffered three gunshots each. The police said the couple had married without the consent of the woman’s family and this led to the tragic incident.
