QUETTA: On the occasion of the International Afghan Refugees Day on Thursday, Afghans living in Pakistan have applauded the country’s role in providing them shelter and educational facilities.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) conducted a seminar at a local hotel in Quetta to celebrate the International Afghan Refugees Day. Representatives of UNHCR Khalid Usman, Arbab Talib, Javed Kazmi, Mercy Corps’s Dr Saeedullah Khan, Zia Tareen and a large number of Afghan refugees were in attendance.

Addressing the seminar, 18-year-old Afghan refugee girl, Mehbooba Tareen, said, “Being a refugee is not an easy task because nobody wants to leave their country.”

She said, “Our elders left Afghanistan due to the war on our soil, but we have been treated with love, care and respect in Pakistan and we want to thank the Pakistani nation, who treated us like their brothers and sisters.”

Pakistan not to expel Afghan refugees, says minister

As Eidul Fitr is falling on Saturday (June 16), the UNHCR celebrated Afghan Refugees Day on June 14, but in the rest of the province, the ceremonies will be held on June 20.
