Musharraf files nomination from NA-1 Chitral

PTI’s Shaukat Yousafzai, Ishtiaq Urmar also file papers

PESHAWAR: As the deadlines for nomination papers for the general elections expired on Monday evening, a total 423 nomination papers for the reserved seats of women and minorities were filed with the apex election body in the provincial capital.

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)- Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) spokesperson Sohail Ahmad told The Express Tribune that they had received 262 nomination papers for the 22 reserved seats for women in the provincial assembly.

Moreover,73 candidates had submitted their nomination papers for the three seats reserved for minorities in the K-P assembly.

A further 88 candidates from the province had submitted their nomination papers for nine seats reserved for women in the National Assembly.

Monday was also the last day for submitting nomination papers for general seats in the K-P assembly and the National Assembly (NA).

Candidates thronged the judicial complex in Peshawar to submit their nomination papers to the returning officer.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former provincial minister Shaukat Yousafzai, who was initially ignored by his party for an electoral ticket, submitted his nomination papers in Shangla. The PTI finally awarded him a ticket for his preferred constituency.

Others who submitted their nomination papers on the last day include PTI leader Fazle Ilahi, former minister for forestry Ishtiaq Urmar, and Mardan District Nazim and Awami National Party (ANP) candidate Himayatullah Mayar.

Former president General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf also submitted his nomination papers from NA-1 Chitral.

The ECP had notified June 11 as the last date for submitting nomination papers. The returning officer will complete the scrutiny of documents by June 19.

NADRA blocks Musharraf’s CNIC, passport

The last date for appeals against the decision of the returning officers, for either rejecting or accepting papers of candidates, is June 22.

Similarly, the last date for the decision on appeals for the appellate tribunals is June 27, and the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is June 29.

On June 30, the ECP will issue election symbols to the contesting candidates for the general elections, scheduled to be held on July 25.
