Seven liver transplants carried out successfully at SIUT

Successful liver transplants of seven patients were performed at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) last week. The transplant surgeries were jointly performed by two visiting surgeons from Iran and their three counterparts at SIUT.
All the surgeries were conducted free-of-charge, in accordance with the institute's philosophy of providing all treatment 'free with dignity'.
The patients included two minors, between 10 and 11 years of age, while the other patients were adults. The patients belonged to underprivileged classes and hailed from Southern Punjab, Balochistan and rural Sindh.

All the donors were living people. Sharing their details, the hospital sources said donors were either mothers, husbands or siblings of the patients who are doing well.
One of the flagships of SIUT is kidney transplant as the institute has carried out over 5,000 procedures of kidney transplant ever since the programme was initiated in 1985.
