The top court on Sunday summoned media house owners on the issue of non-payment of salaries to their journalists.

During the hearing at the Supreme Court’s Lahore Registry, the two-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, also suspended the orders to lay off journalists.

Expressing annoyance of not complying with the court’s orders to pay journalists their salaries, the chief justice directed media house owners to appear before the court in person and provide the bench with an explanation.

Electronic Media Reporters Association President Muhammad Asif Butt appeared before the court and informed that media houses were laying off journalists who were demanding for their salaries to be paid.

Justice Nisar ordered that no journalist will be laid off and media houses which fail to comply with the court orders will be dealt strictly.

“Beg or borrow, but pay the journalists their salaries,” the chief justice remarked.
