Disorderly Conduct: Can a prosecutor be a peacemaker?

Lawyers accuse public prosecutor for withdrawing an FIR registered on May 16.

LAHORE:

More than a dozen lawyers raided the office of a district public prosecutor on Friday and misbehaved with him for allegedly pressing his assistant, one of the complainants in an assault case, for an out-of-court settlement.

Advocate Aurangzaib Khan, who was leading the group, accused DPP Saeed Ahmed Shaikh of pressing the assistant district public prosecutor, Muhammad Atif, for withdrawing an FIR registered on May 16 on Khan’s application.

Advocate Khan told The Express Tribune that Gulberg police had registered the FIR against six people for beating him and Atif on orders of a district and sessions judge.

On Friday, he said, he went to the DPP’s office to tell him to stay away from the matter. “I’m the complainant in the case. Why is he pushing Atif for a settlement,” he said. Shaikh rejected the suggestion that he had been forcing his assistant for withdrawal of the FIR and an out of court settlement. He said he had no interest in the issue. He regretted that Khan and his group of lawyers had attacked his office and used foul language.
