PESHAWAR: The matter to finalise the name of caretaker chief minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa will now go to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) after a parliamentary committee failed to reach a consensus on the issue, Malik Noor Saleem Khan of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) said on Saturday.

The meeting of the parliamentary committee was held at the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad. Former provincial ministers Shah Farman and Mehmood Khan represented the PTI whereas Malik Noor Saleem Khan and Mehmood Betani represented the JUI-F.

"We can't agree on a name so we decided to leave the matter to the Election Commission of Pakistan," said Malik Noor. He added that the opposition and government members were not ready to accept each other's choice.

"The matter will automatically go to the Election Commission of Pakistan for a final decision and the assembly secretary will send the names pitched by the opposition and the government to the election commission," Malik Noor said, adding that the committee would complete its three-day period on Sunday.

The opposition has given the names of Manzoor Afridi, a cousin of Javed Afridi who owns the Peshawar Zalmi team, and Justice (retd) Dost Mohammad Khan for the slot, while the government has nominated retired bureaucrats – Himayatullah Khan and Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi.

On Friday, K-P Speaker Asad Qaiser had notified a six-member parliamentary committee of the provincial assembly – including Shah Farman, Atif Khan and Mehmood Khan from the PTI and Noor Saleem Khan, Mehmood Khan Betani and Mufti Fazal Ghafoor of the JUI-F representing the opposition.

Under Article-224(A) of the Constitution, the opposition leader and the chief minister has to decide on a caretaker chief executive within three days of the dissolution of the provincial assembly and if both do not agree on a name, the matter is referred to the parliamentary committee of the K-P Assembly.

The speaker of the provincial assembly forms the parliamentary committee having equal representation from the government and the opposition.
