Maira Chinoy of Maira Chinoy Designs talks about the inspiration and story behind her brand and the current home décor trends that are bound to make your space stand out!

What inspired you to start a home accessories line?

I love working with my hands, I wanted to create the things I imagined. My time in Italy gave me the knowledge and confidence to make things come to life. Also, I found the local market had very few pieces like the ones I make.

From where do you draw inspiration for your pieces?

Having lived in three different continents, each with distinctly differing artistic and cultural influences, I am inspired by the diverse approaches to architecture and design. My decorative accessories and furniture are also very strongly inspired by elements of nature, whether it’s the pieces themselves or the colours I use.

Tell us about your favourite piece and why?

My favourite piece till today is still my horse head sculpture. Even though it was one of the first pieces I experimented with, it still remains an all time favourite. I designed it as part of a project during my time in Italy and the hands on learning and detail that went into creating it led me to where I am today.

What are the current home décor trends and what do you suggest people do to make their homes standout?

My main advice is to add character to your home by adding personal touches. Collect pieces when you travel, add colours you love. Dont be afraid to have fun with your space; it should be a reflection of your personality.

What do you love the most about your job?

I love seeing my imagination take form.  I enjoy working on all my pieces hands on and adding an extra element to any decorative piece or furniture. It’s always rewarding to do what you’re most passionate about.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

At this point in time, my family and I are spending some time in Canada so not being in the same city consistently can be challenging.

How do you wish to make a difference to the local industry through your work?

I’ve introduced alot of quirky pieces into the local industry. I was flattered by the response when I introduced these pieces and bright colours. I hope to continue to create this kind of reaction! All the pieces are locally made and I work closely with the artisans to create them.

Is there anything on your radar that you want to make in the future?

Yes, my appeal is that most of my pieces are unique, one of a kind pieces. So I am constantly planning and creating new designs.
