KARACHI: During an operation against profiteers on Sunday, the district administration took action against 361 shopkeepers and others vendors in the city.

Among those against whom action was taken, 32 were sent to jail. According to the commissioner’s office, a collective Rs444,000 was imposed as fines.

The profiteers who were sent to jail include 12 fruit sellers, six poultry vendors, one milk seller, one meat seller, eight vendors selling groceries and two vegetable sellers.

Karachi Commissioner Ejaz Ahmed Khan has directed all the deputy commissioners of the city to make sure utility items are being sold at government rates, especially during the holy month of Ramazan.

The action being taken against the profiteers is an attempt to provide relief to the public in the month of Ramazan when vendors often try to raise the rates of food items and other essentials.
